There’s something special about live music, and when legends like Neil Young take the stage, it’s always a treat. His first live appearance of 2026 was a surprise to many, as he delivered an intimate acoustic set at a benefit concert in Vancouver, celebrating the 90th birthday of his friend, Canadian environmentalist David Suzuki. The crowd at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre was in for a real treat as Young strummed Heart of Gold and then moved to the piano for a rendition of After the Gold Rush, complete with harmonica.

This special performance marked his first since the Painted Turtle benefit show back in October 2025, and comes after he cancelled all his 2026 tour dates. The event, which raised funds for the David Suzuki Foundation, also featured appearances by Jane Fonda, Al Gore, Sarah McLachlan, Bruce Cockburn, and Chantal Kreviazuk. It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster for Young’s fans, especially after he abruptly cancelled his planned European tour in February, but it seems he’s doing just fine, reassured fans that all is good and he’s just listening to my body.

Despite taking a break from touring, Young has been keeping busy in the studio. He recently finished a new album called Second Song, recorded with the Chrome Hearts at Rick Rubin‘s Shangri-La studios in Malibu, California. What’s more, he’s got a new live album on the way, As Time Explodes, set to drop on May 29. For many, Neil Young will always be the voice behind Heart of Gold, his only solo Billboard Hot 100 No. 1, which topped the charts back in 1972 from his iconic album Harvest. And who can forget After the Gold Rush, the title track from his acclaimed 1970 album, which peaked at No. 8 on the Billboard 200?
