Chris Evans is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, marking his first time as the character since Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The 45-year-old actor recently opened up about returning to the role and why this was the right project after receiving “at least a dozen pitches” over the years.

According to Chris Evans, Marvel bosses have pitched different ideas to him over 8 years, starting with a dinner meeting with Lou D’Esposito and Kevin Feige in 2018. At the time, they discussed the possibility of Steve Rogers taking on the identity of Nomad, but the idea didn’t feel right, and Evans asked them to keep pitching.

Over the course of eight years, Evans heard at least a dozen pitches, all of which were good, but none of which felt quite right. However, when he heard that Robert Downey Jr. was in talks with Marvel, and Chris Evans received a pitch from Avengers: Doomsday co-director Joe Russo, everything fell into place.

The actress’s male counterpart said, “I guess it’s a never-say-never, but certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because I think everyone here is precious with their role in the universe,” adding that he doesn’t want to mess with the legacy of the character.

Evans briefly returned to the MCU in 2024, reprising his Fantastic Four role of Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor’s return to the Marvel universe has been highly anticipated, and it seems that Avengers: Doomsday is the right project at the right time.
