Netflix is talking with Spotify about working together on music projects. Both companies want to offer more to their users because of strong competition in streaming.

According to the Wall Street Journal, they discussed making a music awards show, a live concert series, celebrity interviews, and quick documentaries to stay up-to-date.

Netflix is also creating its own music shows. It is bringing back the classic talent contest Star Search and will soon release a new show called Building the Band. This show is about musicians trying to form bands without meeting each other before rehearsals. It is hosted by AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys.

Brandon Riegg, Netflix’s VP of nonfiction, said their dating show Love Is Blind and survival show Million Dollar Secret have been hits.

Netflix hired Jeff Gaspin, a former NBCUniversal executive who helped create The Voice, to lead music competition shows. He said they might do a live finale for Building the Band if it returns but only if it makes sense, not just for live’s sake.

There is another music competition coming soon, said sources.

These talks show Netflix wants to grow its live content and add more after raising subscription prices in the US this year.

Netflix’s ad-free Standard plan price went up by $2.50 to $17.99 a month, and the Premium plan rose to $24.99. Meanwhile, Spotify’s Premium subscription also increased, but only by $1 to $11.99.

Netflix and Spotify are competing for more paying users. Netflix had 301.6 million subscribers at the end of 2024, a 16% increase, while Spotify reached 268 million, up 12%.

Spotify is also trying new things with video. Since March 2025, Spotify offers music videos in some countries and is expanding to 85 more markets. They even launched exclusive K-pop videos just for paying subscribers.
