The soundWhere house music comes from

House music was born in Chicago in the early 1980s. The name is usually traced to the Warehouse, the club where Frankie Knuckles played disco, soul and European electronic music, re-edited and stretched for the dance floor. Local producers soon started making their own tracks on affordable drum machines and synthesizers, and a new genre took shape.

What makes a track house:

  • The four-on-the-floor kick: a bass drum on every beat of the bar
  • A tempo usually between 120 and 130 BPM
  • Claps or snares on beats two and four, hi-hats on the off-beats
  • Roots in disco, soul and gospel, often audible in the vocals and chords
  • Repetition used as a tool: grooves that build slowly instead of changing constantly

From Chicago it travelled to New York, Detroit, London and Ibiza and split into countless styles — deep, soulful, tech, progressive, Afro and many more. Forty years on, the kick drum is still the same.
