Indie runs through our rotation next to deep house and house: guitar songs, bedroom pop, dreamy synth tracks and everything that refuses to fit a format.

Independent music is close to how Anti Radio works. Many of the artists you hear sent their tracks to us directly, and every song is picked by a person who listens to it first — no paid placements, no ad breaks, no algorithm.

“Indie” started as a word about business, not sound. In the UK of the late 1970s and 1980s, bands released records on small independent labels instead of the major companies, and the charts of those labels gave the scene its name. In the United States, college radio played a similar role, giving a home to bands the mainstream ignored.

Over time the word came to describe an attitude as much as a label:

• Songs that put character ahead of polish
• Guitars, but also synths, drum machines and home recordings
• A do-it-yourself spirit: recording, releasing and promoting your own music
• Melodies that stay with you, often with a twist

Today indie covers indie rock, indie pop, dream pop, bedroom pop and many sounds in between — and thanks to the internet, an artist can be independent from anywhere.
