Lauren Mayberry, lead singer of Chvrches, recently released her debut solo single “Are You Awake?” Earlier this month, accompanied by Tobias Jesso Jr. on piano. She’s also embarked on her very first solo tour, where she’s been showcasing her versatile talents.

During the opening night of her tour, she impressed fans by covering Madonna’s iconic track “Like A Prayer,” a song she’s continued to include in her performances throughout the tour. However, her Sunday night show in Brooklyn held another delightful surprise.

Towards the end of her second night at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, Lauren Mayberry invited Matthew Koma from Winnetka Bowling League onto the stage. Matthew, who has collaborated closely with Mayberry on her new solo material and even co-wrote “Are You Awake?” with her, accompanied her on acoustic guitar. Together, they delivered a memorable rendition of the title track from the beloved ’60s rock movie “That Thing You Do!”—a song that’s forever associated with the legendary Adam Schlesinger (known for his work with Fountains Of Wayne, Ivy, and Tinted Windows).

This performance was a true highlight of the evening, showcasing Mayberry’s remarkable vocal prowess and her ability to connect with the audience on a personal level. It’s no wonder that her rendition of “That Thing You Do!” is a fantastic addition to the Anti Radio playlist, a testament to the enduring charm of both the song and Mayberry’s talent.
