In a rare interview, Irina Viner, the legendary coach of the Russian national team, spoke openly about her athletes, including Lyasan Utiasheva, whom she believed was “meant” to become an Olympic champion.
Utiasheva responded emotionally in her Telegram channel, admitting she watched Viner’s interview “with tears.” “A huge and vital part of my life. I deeply admire this woman for her courage, journey, and extraordinary personality,” she wrote.
She revealed her childhood Olympic dream and the pain of leaving the sport. “Thank you for your support and our shared path,” she added. “It’s not the fall that matters—it’s the strength to rise again. The scar on my leg reminds me of that.”
Viner also discussed the role of toughness in sports and named gymnasts she never had to discipline.
